A knight in full harness, sword raised and sweating, facing a large gold-shelled snail that is not reacting.

Snailknight

Speed was not the problem.

I
The margin

He was not asked to draw it

The scribe finished the holy text before the light went, and a hand’s width of page was left at the bottom. He drew a snail there. Then, facing it, a knight in full harness — losing.

No one commissioned the snail. No one paid for it. It is not in the contract and his name is nowhere near it. And yet it is in hundreds of books, across two centuries, in psalters and books of hours and genealogies, and in seven hundred years nobody has explained why.

II
The knight

He is doing everything correctly

He brought everything a man can bring. Plate and mail, a sword he knows the weight of, a shield with his own house painted on it. He read the ground before dawn. He knows the hour.

He has a plan for the morning, and beneath it a second plan for the moment the first one breaks.

Look at him. He is sweating through the visor, and he is doing everything correctly.

III
The snail

Nothing he brought was the variable

It did not train. It has no house, no colours, no hour. It has no second plan, because it never had a first one. It did not read the ground, and it did not need to.

It never agreed to the fight at all.

He was faster than it. That was not the problem either.

IV
The scribe

Somebody would open the book after him

He was not paid for the snail. It earned him nothing, it was not in the commission, and he signed none of it. The rest of the page was the work; the snail was what was left over.

He drew it because there was room at the bottom, and because somebody would open the book after he was gone.

Seven hundred years later, somebody did.

The colophon

A story, a drawing, and an address

There is no roadmap and no utility. It is not an investment and it is not a plan. The drawing was free to make, and the knight still loses — which is not a promise about anything, only what the picture has always shown.
